Rubber
is obtained from the juice of certain trees, which grow in hot countries.
This rubber is then boiled and pressed between two iron rollers to be made
into sheets ready to be exported. Rubber is elastic. It can be stretched
to any shape. Water and electricity cannot pass through it. When pure, it
is soft and sticky. It becomes hard, if sulfur is added to it. Pure rubber
is used to cover electric wires to protect us from electric shocks.
Motorcars move easily because their tyres are made of rubber. We play with
footballs made of rubber. Rubber is used in making fire-hoses,
children’s toys and belts for machines.
